Chromebook v/s traditional laptop

General consumer point of view - how chromebooks staking up with traditional PC.

Item
Chromebook
Tradtional Laptop.
Surfing
Yes
Yes ( I use chromebrowser 80% of my time on PC)
Web apps
Yes (Chrome app store)
Yes (web apps from chrome store)
MS Office and Windows programs
I love google docs over office because os simplicity and ability to to work collaboratively. These documents are compatible if not convertible to office docs. I use docs for my school work.
Office suit is available
Skype, iTunes, Photoshop, Quicken, and other essential programs
( I don’t understand why microsoft is worried about itunes and photoshop etc.) I have alternatives and web apps. I heard Microsoft(c) is making skype web app. I personally use google hangouts to connect with family and friends. More scope for malicious software, virus. I am a common user and I don’t use photoshop the basic tools of photo editing are available online. Photoshop is also planning for web apps if not there are plenty of web alternatives.
Yeah, traditional PC runs all these programs and they run in the background even when I don’t actually need them and on top of it the antivirus makes the things even more worse by slowing down the system. More applications, more fan noise, more trouble to focus on what I actually wanted to do.
Desktop
Can not place anything on desktop. It’s just a background image. To be honest I don’t want to place anything on the desktop. All the apps are available in the launcher and frequently used apps/ pages are hooked on to the shelf (Windows taskbar/ Mac Dock) However the desktop icons are coming to chromebook soon which I think is not a must have feature
You can place anything on desktop. Add widgets and sidebar etc. I have a Toshiba satellite laptop running windows7 takes as much as 2 minutes to get to the browser with the sidebar widget on.
Watch popular movies and TV shows offline
In fact, these days, internet is available everywhere if not chromebooks are 4G capable. However I normally prefer tablet to watch this content and there are millions of apps that let me watch these shows offline. It can play all popular video formats saved on local storage with a built in player.
You can install variety of players and play almost any format. Every player fight to become a default player. I have to make sure all the checkboxes are properly checked. Else I have to right click and select open with (certain player)
Connect to most peripheral devices
Can not install drivers for peripherals like printers, scanners etc. Printing can only be possible with cloud printing. Keeps track of printing orders. At least you know how many pages you are printing. You don’t have to be a geek to do this.
Drivers need update and they may fail often. Please don’t comment about this. A common user suffers with this on day to day basis.
Documents
All the documents created on google docs securely saved in cloud with a capability of availing them offline for editing/viewing. It’s your personal storage and securely protected with a password. If you are concerned you may want to add two step verification for additional security.
Documents can be saved anywhere and everywhere. Advanced MS software for creating and editing (expensive) documents. Can’t work collaboratively (Not that I know off) with Microsoft Office Home/ Student. This will create replicas of documents. Progress can not be well perceived especially when doing group assignments/ work.
Thanks for scroogle campaign and the above information is just to show how truthful is the campaign in a layman point of view.

Pros of chromebook:

  1. Your gmail password serves as your account password. One password with two step verification makes it more secure. You can lend your laptop without fear of having your friend access your files as they are all in cloud and secured with password.
  2. No complex/unnecessary programs run on startup. Boots up in seconds.
  3. No antivirus is required.
  4. Millions of web apps available on chromestore.
  5. No fear of losing data. All your work/ docs are saved on cloud.
  6. seamless syncing. When my chromebook is not handy I can simply login to any chrome browser on any platform to get the same experience. I use my friend's chromebook and I have no different experience than what my chromebook provide. All my apps/ bookmarks are readily available (internet connectivity is a must) Scroogle “Brick” concept may be applicable here.
  7. Above all it is simple and inexpensive can serve 80% of “My” daily tasks.
  8. I have seen updates installs in seconds and always bring very rich and new experience. It gets even better in future.
Microsoft showed their comparisons in the table here You may want click this link to get to a conclusion. By starting scroogle campaign google bring chromebooks into limelight and people started to search more about chromebooks. What a free publicity.
Microsoft claims chromebook is not a laptop and it is a brick without an internet connection. I have laid my thought in the above table and you decide which one suits your needs.
I personally like the chromebooks for their simplicity. I bought a chromebook as a secondary laptop and now I am using it all the time and I only open my PC as required (may be once a week) What is your experience, if you have a chromebook. What is your thoughts, if you are considering to buy a laptop.

Isn't this cool! Google Translate

Google translates the comments right then and there. If I am curious about a comment I should copy the text and paste it in translate and find out what it is. I would probably need to try it out with different languages before I get the actual meaning. But now it's just a click away. How lovely is that.

Chromebook: What can be improved.

Google made different categories for chrome apps, extensions but is there any apps that are made only for chromebooks. If so where is the category for "For Your Chromebook". Chromebooks are becoming increasingly popular for their simplicity buy they are still considered to be a secondary laptops. Having no DVD ROM, no Printing capability (Cloud printing is not always reliable) will not make any change to keep chromebook as a primary laptop. Can anyone name things that will push chromebook into secondary laptops slot.

Google Voice Search Hotword

Google you don't seem to be doing this right. You released a fantastic extension and you forgot to avail this to the world. I couldn't find "Google Voice Search Hotword" showing up in my chromebook.
